I’m going to go ahead and leave the site up, but the business end of asking for donations and making updates is done. I hope you’ve found something here thought provoking.

If this is your first time to the site I suggest looking at KEY POINTS, LETTERS TO CONGRESS and FIND YOUR LEGISLATORS. People have asked me what my message is, and I don’t really have one. I was shocked to learn that AIG has recently given bonuses to some of their top executives. I ask you to support the movement to reach back and take back those bonuses and reinvest that money in the company so that the American people can have some hope that we, as investors, will get a return on the loan we made to AIG and other companies.

I ask you to oppose the movement to allow private companies to work within the government. If private workers are allowed to work alongside government workers in the same building, on the same project, accountability becomes impossible. Who is responsible for what under that scenario? What jurisdiction are these companies under? Who do they answer to? However well or poorly the American government functions at least there is a system of accountability in place to oversee its operation. That is significant.

My name is… I’m from…

I don’t know to what extent the government is planning on building actual buildings, but I ask you to include in any plans for building new buildings that they be built according to LEED and Energy Star standards. The information tends to show that when construction cost for traditional building construction is compared to green building, the traditional building is somewhat cheaper. When the cost of using a traditional building is compared to the cost of using a green building the cost of the green building is significantly less.

In theory we want these buildings to stand the test of time and be usable for years to come. We need to consider a building’s entire life cycle when making a cost benefit analysis. There is no point in making a construction cost analysis and claiming that you have calculated how much that building costs. That is only one part of the cost of a building and is not even a particularly large part of the cost of a building. Buildings built according to LEED and Energy Star standards save money over time. That’s good for the taxpayer, both because individuals will end up paying lower utility bills and because the government will pay less on utility bills as well and be able to either lower taxes or spend that saved money on other things necessary for a well-functioning society.

Using a building is not free. Buildings consume roughly 1/3 of the energy in the world and 70% of the nation’s electricity (NSTC 2008). We’re paying for that. The taxpayer is paying for that. The taxpayer is the one paying the government’s utility bill. We need to take advantage of modern technology that lowers that cost.
